Surfing Uluwatu Bali

Uluwatu has been a famous lef-hander in Bali ever since the surf films of the 1970's. To get there, get a bemo or a bike from Kuta Beach and go up the road past the airport to the uluwatu temple. Once there walk down the reef alongside the cave. Uluwatu is for experienced surfers only and is a totally epic left hander with hollow and fast waves breaking over a sharp coral reef. Uluwatu holds up to a twelve foot wave.

Uluwatu picks up a lot of swell but it is almost always crowded. You had better pack your boxing gloves and make sure you don't drop in on the locals. The Peak is best at mid or high tide. Do not surf there at low tide because it closes out. It is a very consistent break and works from one foot to eight foot. The shifting take-off sets you up for some short and powerful tubes. Racetracks is one hundred meters further out the line-up and is best at low tide. It is a fast wave, with easy tubes and heaps of sections. Uluwatu is best when the racetrack connects with the peak but you have to be a sick tube rider.

If you want some culure while you are Uluwatu, you can go and visit the temple with all the monkeys, but watch out for them, they will snatch cameras, bags and may even bite you. They are nasty little mongrels. Uluwatu temple is plonked on top of a steep cliff seventy meters above the ocean. The Kecak dance or monkey dance is held at the temple around sundown and lasts for about an hour.
