Tahiti Surfing Adventures

Tahiti is in French Polynesia in the South Pacific Ocean. It is a tropical paradise with warm clear water with waves breaking over pristine coral in a beautiful blue sea. Teahupoo is the best known monster wave in Tahiti and there are many more waves like this. There are barrels galore in Tahiti to surf until you can't walk. The seasons in Tahiti are the summer from November to March and the winter from April to October. During the summer, the swells mostly come from the north. In winter big southerly storms blow in from Antarctica and pumping swells hit the reefs.

To get around the surf spots in Tahiti a boat is most desirable. But it can be expensive. Accommodation can be up from $50 per night and food can cost up to $30 for dinner. Boat rides out to the waves can cost about $10 a ride. Most breaks can be a fifteen to twenty minute paddle. You may be able to hitch a ride on a boat going in and out of the passes. On the north coast of Tahiti there are several excellent waves such as Matavai Point and Point Venus. The south coast of Tahiti has the breaks called Papara and Fishermans Point as well as Big and Small Pass off Tahiti Iti.

Off the north of the island of Moorea there is excellent surf and off the west coast Haapiti has great waves. There are lots of surf-oriented bungalows around Ha'apiti as well. Oppahuhoo Bay is reputed to be just like Grajagan. You can get to Moorea by ferry and it takes about an hour to get there. Huahine has lots of newly discovered breaks on its western coast.
