South Sumatra Surf

There are a number of land based surf breaks that are situtated in South Sumatra. The main area that has been developed is around the coastal town of Krui. To get there can be a real mission however for the faint at heart but for the experienced traveller it is just par for the course. From Australia, I would suggest a flight from The Gold Coast airport flying AirAsia (AirAsia.com) to Kuala Lumpur and then catch a plane to Palembang which is an oil town in South Sumatra. From there you can catch a bus to Krui or if there is a crew book a car and a driver to get you there. Another option would be to fly into Jakarta direct and then catch a bus to Bandar Lampung which is a large town at the very tip of South Sumatra. From there get a car and driver to take you to Krui for around eighty dollars. There are a number of very reputable long distance taxi companies in Bandar Lampung so it is not a problem at all. When you arrive at the Jakarta international airport .walk over to the Domestic airport, you will find many domestic budget airline counter operating there, ask for flight to Bengkulu , compare prices and best travel time.

One more alternative and this is a very good option is to fly into Jakarta and then go over to the domestic terminal and enquire about a flight to Bengkulu, which is north of Krui. The cost would be about 250,000 rupiah for example if you flew Adam Air. You may even get a bonus surf at Bengkulu and explore the area south to Krui. The Putra Rafflesia bus takes about five or six hours to get to Krui and will cost approximately 50,000 rupiah.

There is a hotel in Krui where you can stay at the Krui Town Hotel for instance. Their phone number is 62-868 1212 2115. At Krui itself There is the Krui Right and Krui Left which have the south east trades blowing off shore or along shore. Out the point there is The Peak and Lintik. There is a another surf break south of Krui at Karang Nyimbor which has a surf camp as well as a number of losmens which will be much cheaper. There is a left hand break that is quite suitable for the intermediate to advanced surfer. At the next point south there is the break that is called the Sumatran Pipeline(Way Jambu) which has accommodation straight in front of the surf.

If you head north from Krui you will find Jenny's Right which has a surf camp right on the beach in front of it. Jimmy's Right is about ten minutes from Jenny's Right and is a fast barrelling tube for advanced surfers only. Jimmy's Left is another two or three hundred meter walk up the beach which can barrel in sections for up to two hundred meters. These breaks are the ones that are well known. There will be hundreds of amazing surf breaks that have not yet been discovered. You can hire a bike with a surfboard rack to trek around finding your own private perfect surf.
