Surfing Shipstern Bluff Tasmania

Shipstern Bluff in South-eastern Tasmania is one of the world's newest and most scary waves. You have seen all the footage of the suck-up and the ledge and the thickness of the lip. Shipstern Bluff is an ugly spitting beast. Talk about the ultimate terror. Despite all that, Shipstern Bluff is one of the most consistent waves in Australia. But it is cold - the brass monkey, along with other species of wildlife, is extinct in Tasmania. At Shipstern bluff you will cop a hiding but you may also get the rides of your life. The step is the killer. You have to vault over it into the air like some bungee jumping lunatic you will be screaming with fear.

At Shipstern Bluff, be prepared for massive wipeouts. One guy survived a good shellacking but his surfboard ended up fifty meters high up on the rocks. Another guy landed hard after the drop from the step and smashed his face in and blacked out. He woke up getting churned around inside Shipstern Bluff supersized washing machine. Luckily, he is still alive.

To get to Shipstern Bluff, you will somehow need to get to Hobart. Either fly there or get the vehicular ferry from Melbourne. Travel on down the Arthur Highway(A9) and leave the highway at Stormlea Road. You will need to use a boat or paddle for a long way. It requires South-South-East winds and at least a six foot swell.
