Surfing in Senegal

Go surfing in Senegal I hear you say? are you mad? Have you totally gone off your rocker from staring into the sun and getting hit on the head by big waves. Well, that is what I thought before I started researching surf in Senegal. Senegal is in West Africa and gets swell from the south and north Atlantic. There is a fair fetch of ocean before the waves hit Senegal so you can get some decent swells and the wave size is not so bad.

Saint Louis is an island in the north of Senegal which is about one hundred and seventy kilometers north from the capital Dakar, of which we will speak later. St Louis is a beach break with left and right waves breaking along the beach. Kayar is another beach which is closer to Dakar and the waves break on a sandy bottom.

Dakar in Senegal WEst Africa is the best place for surfing in Senega. The Island of N'Gor at the tip of the peninsula at Dakar has rights and lefts breaking off it. Just paddle out or get a lift in a boat. It is a rocky point that breaks on reefs. Just around the corner going South towards Club Med you have a number of reefs such as Tir à l'arc surfspot, beware of reef injuries. There are Great Left or right tubes at these reefs. Go further on down the road to NO Return which has a hollow right hand tube but watch out because if you don't make the take off you will get smashed against the cliff, and that hurts. Secrets is the next surf break at Dakar and has been ironically named because every man and his dog surfs here. A left and right break on a reef. In the next bay, Vivier has a nice right hand tube breaking on the reef. Go down a fair way to Ouakam which is said to be the best wave in Senegal. It breaks on a reef right in front of the bay and the hollow tubes can go for as far as three hundred meters. A fair way south of Dakar is Toubal Dialow a little fishing village which has some decent waves on a beach.
