Samoan Surfing Adventure

Samoa is made up of Western Samoa and American Samoa. Samoa is near the equator so it is hot most of the year. The wet season is between November and April and the dry season goes from May to October. The average annual temperature is about twenty six degrees Celsius. Samoa is pretty expensive to get to and you can get there quite easily from New Zealand, Australia, Fiji, Tonga, Hawai'i and Los Angeles. To get around inside Samoa, you can use ferries and launches which connect all the main islands. Samoa has powerful surf with sharp reefs that break offshore. From November to April Samoa gets swells from the north and from may to november Samoa gets Southerly swellls.

Western Samoa has got some great surf. On the island of Upolu is the break of Boulders, near cape niuato'i. It's alternative name is Aganoa Beach and is a wicked left rocky reef that breaks hollow and fast. It is a wave that gets really big and is certainly only for expert surfers only. The take off is totally awesome and then you face a massive wall ahead of you which just throws over your head. Coconuts is a humungous right hander breaking on a rocky reef. You can get to it by paddling out at the Coconuts Resort or take a boat from Sa'moana resort. It works on a South swell and is best at high tide. Coconuts is one of the best waves in Samoa. Take off on a big right hand tube and enjoy the ride. Ytops is a left hand wave that breaks on coral reef. It is hard to find so you will have to ask when you get there.

In American Samoa, Alofau is a left that can be difficult to get to. You either have to walk down a hill or paddle out from Fagiutua Bay. It is a good place to surf when the swell is huge as it has to wrap around and gets cleaned up on the way. It is also protected from the south-east trades so that is a definite bonus. Fatuuli is a short drive from Pago Pago just off from Utulaina Point. It is a very heavy fast hollow wave that is for experienced surfers only. It works on a big south swell with a northerly wind. If you eat it at this surf spot you will really get smashed. Poloa is at the far western end of the island of Tutuila. It is a point and reef break that receives swells from the north. The right hander works best on a rising high tide. You will not have any crowds to worry about here..
