Surfing in Recife Brazil

Hey! Guess what? You cannot surf here in Recife in North-Eastern Brazil. There are so many sharks that the policia have made it illegal to surf here. The fishermen fished the place out so there was no food for the sharkies, so the Recife Sharks decided to start eating surfers instead. Good one, dickheads! You can go south to a place called Porto de Gallinhas. Catch a bus to get there. There are lots of surf shops there so you could hire a surfboard if you had to.

Maracaipa Beach has some good waves. The indian tribe called Tupi Guarani, who inhabited the coastal regions, the place Maracaípe, because there were lots of Ipê trees here, a tree found in the Atlantic bush. The indians made “maraca”, a musical instrument. From there comes the origin of this creative name - Maraca(instrument) + Ipê (tree) = Maracaípe. Maracaipe is situated in Pernambuco has reliable surf because it is an exposed beach break. A west or north-west wind is offshore for this beach and winter is the best time of the year to surf at Maracaipe Beach.

Cupe Beach has rights and lefts breaking on a reliable beach break. Southeast ground swells bring the best waves to Cupe Beach. You will be sure to get a wave to yourself as it does not get too crowded. Cupe Beach goes for four kilometers so there are plenty breaks to choose from. It is situated north of the town of Porto de Galinhas. At either end there are coral reefs, so give them a look as well or go and have a snorkel dive.
