Puerto Escondido Mexico Surfing Adventure

The best surfing season for Puerto Escondido in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico is from April to October but reports say that there are still decent waves in winter. There are fun peaks a sick barrels. The sandbars are shifting at Playa Zicatela and there are some nice points south of Puerto Escondido. Watch out for the rips. You can get airline tickets from the USA for about $400 to $600. You can get a room at the Zicatela Bungalows or the Hotel Innes for about $40 a night. It can close out and most of the time is blown out by 10 a.m. but you can get some nice warm tubes.

The waves are mainly beach breaks at Puerto Escondido with right and left hollow waves breaking on a sandy bottom. Some people refer to it as the Mexican Pipeline as it is fast and hollow and some people say it is the best beach break in the world. At the beach of Zicatela there are lots of closeouts and backwash. If you surf early in the morning you can avoid the onshore wind that blows up around ten to eleven o'clock in the morning. The surf can get crowded at times and the locals can sometimes get heavy.

There are many breaks around the Puerto Escondido region such as Chacahua, Punta Encomienda, Colotepec, Zepotonengo, Topleca and Puerto Angel around San Pedro. The Puerto Escondido Left is a point break that is hollow and fast with a rock and sand bottom. This left wave is situated at the south end of the bay and is easily reached by bus. Chacahua has a right hand point break that is a fun wave. It works best on a low or mid tide and has a sandy bottom. It works best in a north or north-east wind with a swell from the south.
