Surfing Newcastle Beaches

There are heaps of beaches in Newcastle that is a city two hundred kilometers north of Sydney in New South Wales, Australia. Starting from Stockton Beach which is north of Newcastle over the other side of the Hunter River. Either catch a ferry across or drive over the Stockton Bridge via the Industrial Highway. Stockton is very well protected in southerly winds and is best surfed on a high tide. The best banks are down the beach near the sewerage pipe.

In the center of newcastle itself there are numerous breaks. Nobbys is protected in a Southerly wind and has a reef out the back which breaks consistently if there is any swell. Inside on the sand banks there are mainly left-handers which can get very sucky and gnarly especially at low tide. Just in front of the Newcastle Baths is The Cowrie Hole which is a very hollow right hander that breaks on a shallow shelf which is called Flat Rock. It is surfed mainly be boogie boarder but you have to really know what you are doing or you will get splattered on the very hard rock bottom. Inside, the wave reforms to break in what is called the Cowrie Hole, a very short right hander that is not all that hollow.

Newcastle Beach itself is semi offshore in a Northeasterly and is the only place in Newcastle that is a little bit protected during summertime noreasters. It works best with a north west wind and a long north east swell. When it gets bigger you will get monster lefts peeling off the point at newcastle beach that go for ages. South Newcastle has some peaking waves and is a relatively consistent break.

Going around to the next beach which is Bar Beach. Bar Beach has a reef at the northern end which breaks very consistently. It is not the best wave but it is consistent. Further down the beach you get peaks breaking on sand bars. At the cliff there is a consistent peak which always breaks even in the smallest swells, but it does get crowded and is hardly worth surfing because of the crowds. Dixon Park has some decent sand banks and depending on the banks you will get lefts and rights all over the place. At Merewether Point, the right handers break over a rocky bottom and there are a number of takeoff points spread from the flags to Old Ladies. It can get very crowded and the grommets are like flies there.
