Surfing East Sepik Wewak New Guinea

To get to the East Sepik area of New Guinea on the northern coast, you will have to fly there. Air Niugini, Airlink, or MAF fly to Wewak, the main town of the East Sepik, from Port Moresby, Madang, and Vanimo. Lutheran Shipping sometimes carry passengers to ports in New Guinea, and the MV Thompson sails to Wuvulu, Aua, Manus, and Madang irregularly. You can get a boat for Kairiru and Muschu Islands from the Wewak wharf for tweny kina one way.

Now to find a place to stay in Wewak. The Sepik Surfsite Lodge has rooms for about K150. The Paradise New Wewak Hotel is an old school hotel with rooms from K110-150. The SIL Guesthouse is pretty good for about K70-90. Ralf Stuttgen's Place is cheap for about forty kina but is fifteen kilometers inland. doh!

Right in town, Wewak Point is a hollow left hander reef break that works best when the wind is offshore from the south or south west. The wharf at Mission Point in Wewak Harbour has lefts and rights breaking off the jetty. After surfing at Wewak Point head up the coast to Moem Point which has a rocky hazardous right hand reef break. You can get a bus to Moem barracks, then walk about a kilometer to the waves. Forok Point is about seventeen kilometers to the east of Wewak. Karawop is a left hand point twenty eight kilometers from Wewak. Cape Barabar is a reef break on Muschu Island that has lefts and rights. Catch the boat there from Wewak. Tarawai Island is North West from Wewak and is just next to Wallis Island. There is a left and right reef break on the western side of the island that is offshore in the northeast winds. Here is a picture I found. It is a bit small but you can see how it might break.
