Surfing Kavieng New Ireland New Guinea

Kavieng is on the Northern Tip of the island of New Ireland in New Guinea. How the hell do I get there? I hear you ask. Good question. The answer is that you have to first go to the Capital of New Guinea, Port Moresby. You can fly to Port Moresby from Cairns, Brisbane, or Sydney in Australia, and also from Singapore, Hong Kong, and Tokyo. You will probably have to stay there for a night and then fly to Kavieng with Air Niugini or Airlink. Before I forget , make sure that you get a New Guinea Tourist Visa that is valid for sixty days before you get there. There are some flights to and from Tokua, Manus, and Lihir. Rabaul Shipping sails to Rabaul and Kimbe once a week. You can get boats to the nearby islands and a boat goes twice a week to Lavongai Island.

So you know how to get there. Well where do I stay when I get there if I am not on one of those fancy surf camp tours? If you have heaps of bread then go and stay at the Nusa Island Retreat which is just near the Nusa break. (At the moment one Aussie dollars equals 2.38 kina and the yankee dollar is 3.14 kina). The Malagan Beach Resort will set you back about two to three hundred kina a night. The Kavieng Hotel rooms go for about eighty to two hundred kina a night. For the cheap and affordable there is the Kavieng Guesthouse in Emirau Street that has rooms/beds for about a hundred kina. And the winner is the Peter ToRot Center in Tabar Terrace that charge a reasonable fifteen to seventy kina to stay there.

Now that you have settled in and you want to go surfing. Wax the board up and hop off to Pikinini Point which is a fabulous right hand point that is hollow and fast. Nusa Island has a great left at the north end of the island. Nago Island is a great fun wave with both lefts and rights. It picks up a fair bit of swell so it is a good bet you will get waves here. Edmago Island has some decent left handers and also a right hander if the swell and wind are right. Long Longs is a fantastic right hander that works excellently on a big swell. Long Longs is a fun wave that is perfect for malibus and fishes. Ral Island sticks out in the sea a bit more so it picks up most of the swell and has a right and left hander.

Be aware that the Kavieng Surf Club allows only twenty guest surfers in the Kavieng Area in one time. This is a good idea to keep crowds down and lets the locals get some decent waves for themselves without getting dropped in on by kooks like me. Contact them via email.. kaviengsurfclub at global dot net dot pg. And another thing is that the season is from December to April and the swells come from the NOrth Pacific.

If you want everything done for you World Surfaris do surf travel packages. The Nusa Island Retreat also do packages and have boats to take you to all the surf breaks. For a yacht surf package surf travel co has the Tiki Tu, a catamaran from $218 per night.
