New Caledonia Surfing Trip

New Caledonia is surrounded by a humungous coral reef with the world biggest lagoon. The outer barrier reef has thousands of natural reef passes and only a few of them have been surfed. You may be the first one to discover and surf your very own reef pass. Imagine that - perfect lefts and rights peeling off either side of the pass and you discovered it. But keep it to yourself and enjoy it. As well as the main island of New Caledonia, there are tons of smaller islands with reefs, beaches and surf surf surf. New Caledonia surf is very consistent and you are sure to find waves. If you have a packaged surf trip, there is the Ouano Surf Camp, which is right in front of one of the island's best waves.

If you have a packaged surf trip, there is the Ouano Surf Camp, which is right in front of one of the island's best waves. It is located near La Foa on the western side of New Caledonia. You will need to get a boat because Ouana is about twenty minutes from land. Ouano is a two hundred metre lefthander that can hold up to ten foot swells. You can hire a car in Noumea and drive to La Foa and hire a boat from some of the local dudes who are very friendly. You may be able to camp on a small island but you will need to take food and water with you.

New Caledonia can get pretty windy but it is veering offshore on the inside. There are waves near Bourail and just off Noumea is the Dumbea Pass with rights and lefts breaking off either side of it. You will need a boat to get out to it of course and works in an east to south-east wind. It can hold up to a twelve foot wave. The Dumbea rights will work better when the wind veers a tad to the north. But it is said that the left is a little more consistent in the trade winds.
