Jeffreys Bay South Africa Surfing

Jeffrey's Bay in South Africa is one of the world's best known right hander points. For more than forty years since the days of the surf movie, The Endless Summer, showed footage of the tiny perfection of cape St Francis, Jeffreys Bay has captured the imagination of surfers around the world. Surfers respect the powerful barrelling Jeffreys Bay tubes that breaks along sharp jagged rocks. When J-Bay gets a bit small and the waves suck dry so dont bounce off the rocks as they can hurt and break boards. Jeffrey's Bay will break in many sections, starting from Supers to Impossibles, and on to Tubes. And don't forget to get some biltong to chew on - it pumps up the protein levels in the body and the chicks just dig it!

You can get to Jeffrey's Bay from the south via Cape Town or from the north driving down the N2 from Port Elizabeth. You can drive past Mossel Bay, the spewing Mossgass Refinery, Victoria Bay and st Francis Bay. When you drive down the hill to the Gamtoos River you will see the lines of perfection wrapping around the point all the way into the bay. There is always lots of sea life at Jeffrey's Bay, especially the well-publicised dolphins who frolic in and out of the waves, upstaging the contest surfers for their spots on the evening news. Sunrise is a special time at Jeffrey's Bay. The world turns red and orange out of the darkness and the waves begin to morph out of the darkness.

There are many places to stay in Jeffrey's Bay. Island Vibe is stuck on top of a sandhill with panoramic views of the Indian Ocean. You can lay in your hammocks on the sundeck and soak up the waves after your exhausting session. Jeffreys Bay Backpackers is in the center of town very close to the surf city main beach. The Pubs and restaurants are just down the road and you can jump in the swimming pool if you are drying out. You can sleep in dormitories, double, or single rooms. Surfpackers is a hostel that was designed for surfers in mind. It is right there at Supertubes, so all you have to do is wake up, roll over, shovel some muesli in your gob, and go outside to surf some mega tubing waves. What more could you ask for? Bliss.
