Huntington Pier in Orange County, California is the original and the best Surf City. That is where they hold most of the contests in California but if you can get there on a good day when the swell is a clean four to six foot with a wind from the desert and you will get smoking waves to satisfy any surf hungry grommet. When it is six foot plus and very heavy looking, then get out your gun and go for it. Surf City rules dude. It is a classic beach break wave with hollow rights and lefts. The best winds for the surf at Huntington are north-east and north and the prime swell direction for Huntington is from the South to the west. Huntington Beach is very consistent and usually has some kind of wave breaking when other places are flat.

Steamer Lane in Santa cruz, Northern California is a world class wave and only for experienced surfers. You will need five millimeter wetsuits, gloves , helmets, booties and watch out that the elephant seals dont eat you in the tube. It breaks on a rocky reef in front of a cliff and is very consistent. And of course it is a right-hander. The best time to surf it is at low and mid tides rising and falling and can hold waves up to about fifteen feet. The best wind direction is from the south or south-west but is also sheltered from the North-west winds and the best swell is from the north or north-west. There is a laid back vibe at this point and if you show respect and don't be a prick and drop in then you will have a fun time.

Black's in San Diego County California is a world class wave for the ultra hard kore surf nazi. It is a beach break with hollow fast right and left hander waves breaking on a sandy bottom. Black's works best on an east wind with the swell coming in from the northwest, west or southwest. Black's is a one mile stretch of beach with shifting wedging peaks. The offshore La Jolla underwater canyons cause the waves to come out of deep water and jack up when they get to the shallow beach. The locals are very greedy with their beach and you may have to get it on early in the morning or when they are all at school or work.
