Surfing in Baja California Mexico

Going Surfing to Baja California in Mexico can be an extreme situation and can be dangerous fro some travellers so do not travel alone and do not flash your baubles around and any conspicuous displays of affluence are a definite no-no. Having said that, there is some great surf in Baja California. You can surf all year round but the best time for sufing is from June to September. Plus you will be able to afford a longer stay with cheaper prices. The climate can vary from tropical to desert.

Within a short driving distance from San Diego you will find many surf breaks in Baja Norte or Northern Baja. Baja Malibu is a powerful beach break with hollow lefts and rights breaking on a sandy bottom. The best swells are from Southwest to northwest and best winds northeast to southeast. To get there get off the toll road just before Cantamar. It is the next one after the San Antonio exit. When the right swells come in you can get hollow barrels on decent sized waves. Baja Malibu is a great spot and you will probably be lucky and get uncrowded waves.

K-38 in Baja Norte is a classic surfing break that has rights and lefts breaking off a rocky reef. K-38 works on North west to south west swells and an east wind. K-38 is located on the K-38 exit off the free road. Go all the way down to the dirt parking spot. K-38 works nearly all year round and catches most swells. When you take off, you slot straight into a nice barrel. The waves are the best wave and you may need a pair of booties to get you back onto the beach after a sick surf session. K-38 is a fun wave but can get crowded at weekends. You can stay at Robert's and camp on the beach by the river bed.

Baja Sur has plenty of warm water except for May and June. Playa Los Cerritos is a fun beach break with rights and lefts breaking on a sandy bottom. Cerritos works on a Northwest or west swell and a north east to south east wind. To get there, turn off Mex 19 just south of the Pescadero Surf Camp and keep going about five kilometers till you hit the beach. Cerritos is an easy fun wave with a great vibe.

Scorpion Bay in Baja Sur Mexico is also called Punta Pequena and San Juanico. Scorpion Bay is a fun right hand point break that breaks on a sharp coral reef interspersed with sand. Scorpion Bay holds up to a eight foot or about a three meter wave. To get there, choose an access road to San Juanico. You may need a four wheel drive to get there through the desert. It is hot and there is no water and it gets very crowded, so makes yer own mind up.
