Gisborne New Zealand

New Zealand is located in the South Pacific and Gisborne is located on the east side of the North Island of New Zealand.Gisborne is the first place in the world to see the sun each day. It is a laid back kiwi town with lots of fun beaches. There are lots of uncrowded surf breaks. In town there are gentle surf breaks such as Waikanae that are perfect for the beginners. Further afield you can discover some fantastic beaches up and down the coast. Wainui Beach is around six kilometers from Gisborne and has waves suitable for most class of surfer. Stockies is a great wave and can hold about up to five feet waves. Sponge Bay is near Tomotu Island but you will have to paddle a long way. It is a world class break. Gisborne has world class breaks and is good in Spring and Autumn.

Kiwis are the friendliest people and so is the wild life and the marine life. Take an eco-tour in the surrounding marine reserves and learn about the Maori culture. Dolphins come around as well as Orcas and fur seals that travel up and down the coast. You can do a shark dive and see the sharks in their natural habitat. Even surfers will benefit from having a look at sharks in their environment so they do not fear them so much. The movie Whale Rider was shot around the area. At low tide you can wade out the reef and feed stingrays by hand. They love to eat fish and crustaceans. Keep still when the rays are around and be careful when stepping back. The eagle ray flaps its wings so walk slowly going through the water.

You can find whatever style of accommodation you want in Gisborne, from high end luxury hotels to cheap backpackers hostels. The marina is close by to town. Gisborne is centrally located but you can go north or south to find some fabulous beaches. Blacks Beach is a well regarded surfing break on the Mahia peninsular. The whole area surrounding Gisborne and the Mahia Peninsular is virtually untouched and you will have the beach to yourself. The main beach at Mahia is a beautiful spot for enjoying the sun and the sand. The mahia peninsular is a great set up for waves and is well worth the drive from Gisborne to get there.

Gisborne is blessed with fresh sea food with a laid back lifestyle. There are crayfish and yellow fin tuna right at their doorstep fresh from the boats. Get your lobster and put it on the barbecue for the taste sensation of your life. Gisborne also has many extreme sports such as sliding down a rock slide on a boogie board at Rere Falls. And wear a helmet for safety. It is actually better with less water. Wearing a full length wetsuit would also be recommended to prevent any knee scrapes on the rocks on the way down.
