Austria

Hiya folks,

I have just been working in a little village near Salzburg, Austria, and I have now finished. It has been giving me the horrors so I am moving along maybe to Germany and then to Amsterdam and maybe England. Austria is an old place with lots of ancient buildings and castles.

Greece

Since Istanbul I hitched through Greece which was a really nice place. We just slept on the beach and ate fish that the fishermen had caught and cooked for us. We just lit fires on the beach and had glorious feasts of fish and bay lobsters and prawns. Camping out on the beach in greece was really good.

Yugoslavia

Then we went through Yugoslavia which is fairly modern and shows little signs of being a communist country with shops and advertisements?

Austria

Austria was nice at Graz where I stayed a few days and looked around. Then I travelled to Salzburg in Austria and got some work in a factory working a lathe doing boring production for about a week and now I am ready to leave once again and maybe find more work, or maybe not. I will go to Munich next and look for something that begets lots of money. So send your letters to Amsterdam. I will be going there sooner or later.

On to Amsterdam and Beyond

Athens is the capital of modern Greece. Athens was the center of greek civilization in the fourth and fifth centuries BCE.
Kavala is a seaport on the Aegean Sea. This is where the apostle Paul came when he entered Greece. The waterfront of Kavala is very entertaining and popular with residents and tourists with its shops and wonderfully authentic Greek Restaurants. The old Ottoman aqueduct was built centuries ago to provide water for the Byzantine acropolis in the city center. Muhammed Ali, the creator of modern day Egypt was born in Kavala and there is a fine statue to him in the town square. If you want to go for an adventure to the island of Thasos, then hop along down to the harbour of Kavala and catch the hydrofoil which will charge you about sixteen euros and the trip takes about forty minutes to get to Thasos.
Istanbul is the capital of Turkey and was the former capital of the Turkish Ottoman Empire that is situated on the Boshphorus.
Yugoslavia was created in 1929 and consisted of Croatia, Slovenia, and Bosnia-Herzegovina. The kingdom of Yugoslavia became a socialist republic ruled by Marshall Tito. It was made up of Serbia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Slovenia, Croatia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. When Tito died, ethnic and nationalistic forces started to split the country apart. In 1991 Croatia and Slovenia say that they were independent countries, and macedonia follows suit, then Bosnia and Herzegovina. Serbia and Montenegro claim that they are the original Yugoslavia but they are not recognised by international countries. There is a war in Bosnia, then a war starts up in Kosovo. Sebia is bombed by NATO airplanes and there is a popular uprising in Serbia and Slobodan Milosevic is charged with war crimes for genocide. The former Yugoslavia is now half a dozen ethnic centered countries that are still riven with ethnic differences and cultural clashes. Centuries old hatreds do not seem to have been a good basis on which to build a country and the former states have a long way to go before there is peace in the former Yugoslavia.
