Siberian Diamond Mining

When the USSR system fell apart many people became unemployed. So they went to Mirny in Yakutia, Siberia. They have diamond mines in the quarries which grows ever larger every day. They have one of the richest diamond mines in the world. Every year a large number of workers flock to the region of Yakutia in Siberai for work. People have always come there for money and a better life. The workers have no desire to own a diamond. They would prefer a car. Some work as cooks serving the quarry workers their dinners.

The vast hole in the ground has a town, Mirny, at the edges of the mine, 8000 kilometers from Moscow. At the center of town is a diamond sorting workshop. There are diamond mines all around the area in Siberia. To the workers it is just a job. They sort the diamonds according to weight and carets. Large stones can be extracted from the Siberian Diamond MIne. If they are big they will be given a name. Those who examine them do not know about the workers who mine them under the ground digging out the dirt to get at the diamonds.

They have mechanical miners which extract all the dirt and it goes to the top using conveyors and trucks. The raw crushed rock is put into a rotating drum to sort the diamonds from the dross. The first Yukutia diamond cutters are now being trained so everything is done in the region. The soviet farms collapsed so workers had to find other work so they become gem cutters instead. Some who worked on collective farms are now first grade diamond cutters. They are shown what to do and slowly they master the trade. In this business size is not everything. All diamonds are precious and must not be lost.

Nobody gets in or out of the diamond cutting room unless the numbers tally. A church is being built by the diamond factory. The company controls the whole town. The town was built around the diamond mine. Experts think that the mine will last another thirty years and there will be lots of the world's most valuable gem found until then. They the mines will move to another spot to wherever there are diamonds to be found under the Siberian tundra.
