Sardinia is part of Italy and was constantly invaded by foreigners throughout the years. In sedilo there is a festival in honour of saint constantine and there is a big horse race during the festival called the L'Ardia di san Constantino. Sedilo is a region in the Province of Oristano which is about 110 kilometers north of Cagliari. Sardinians are great horsemen and love their horses. The village is packed during the festival but you may be able to find a room in any of the surrounding villages. Thousands gather to watch the race, which started in moorish times so that the riders could train to outride their enemies. The race lasts three hours and there are always casualties. They ride breakneck through the streets of the towns risking life and limb for the glory of victory. If people go onto the roads they can get trampled by horses, so stay clear.

You can buy barbecued fresh water eels which are a specialty of the region. Or pork on the spit is quite popular as well. The best way to see Sardinia is by car and you can rent a vintage fiat car to get to Orgosolo. Orgosolo town is in the province of Nuoro and is about a hundred kilometers north of Cagliari. The area of Orgosolo used to be a big bandit area. The movie "Bandits at Orgosolo" made by Vittorio de Seta in 1961 portrayed the lives of the bandits in this area at the time. But tourists are safe from bandits so do not worry about them now. The Orgosolo area reputes to breed the toughest people on the island of Sardinia. The town of Orgosolo is now famous for powerful political murals. The murals first started around the nineteen seventies and deal with local political struggles as well as international human rights issues as well. A traditional sardinian welcome is cheese bread wine and tomatoes. Villages near Orgosolo are fiercely independant and have their own dialects and customs.

The Mamoiada Carnival in Sardinia is a folk dance that was developed as a story about the moorish slaves. The bells on their backs symbolise the clanking of the chains that kept the slaves together. It is a rural dance whose purpose is or was to drive out the goblins from the village and probably to prepare the way for a good harvest.

The costa verde is a beautiful stretch of coast on the west of the island. Tough planning laws have stopped any large scale tourist developments. YOu can camp in the dunes and you do not have to pay. But watch out for the very old prickly junipers that are growing in the dunes. There is thirty miles of sandy heaven, beaches that is. The stretch of sandy beaches are interrupted only by dark cliffs instead of high rise apartments. You will be able to find heavenly beaches, lonely inlets, and bays around Bau, Portu Maga, Funtanazza, Gutturu'e , Piscinas, Pistis, Scivu , and the Torre dei Corsari. These beaches have beautiful scenery, are sheltered from the wind, lots of sand dunes, crystal clear water, golden sand, beautiful sunsets, and many other facilities and attractions.
