The real Germany goes beyond the stereotypes of lederhosen, wurst, and beer. Germany is in the middle of Europe between France and Poland and Austria and Switzerland to the South. After world war two Germany was divided into east and west. The city of Berlin was divided by the Berlin Wall because East Germany was invaded by the Soviet Army at the end of the Second World war. When the berlin wall was standing there was a hundred miles of it. There are still some sections of the wall intact in Berlin. Artists come from all over the world to paint pictures on the berlin wall. You can even buy bits of the wall. But you cannot break any more bits of it off now. Over 160 east germans died trying to cross the Berlin wall. Two years after the wall was built President Kennedy came to bErlin and said "Ich bin ein berliner". IN the eighties the capital of germany was moved to Bonn. Germany is building a new Berlin to be the capital of Europe.

You can get a room in Berlin but it is hard to find a cheap accommodation in Berlin as it is very expensive. East Germans have a sense of nostalgia for the past of the days of communist east germany. They go to the statue of lenin to ask mr lenin for permission to have a party. The party involves spirited renditions of old east german communist scout songs. They even have old communist cars done up as a fashion accessory. Germany sells a lot of environmental technology and the whole country is extremely aware of environmental issues such as renewable energy and recycling.

If you want to hitch hike in germany you call on the phone and they hook you up to find a lift and you split the petrol and costs for the journey. The freeways or autobahns in Germany are very good and cars can travel at speeds over two hundred miles if they like or can. Hydrogen cars are popular in germany at the moment so if you are lucky you will get a lift in one to Niebull and the Sylt Islands. Sylt island is the most northerly point of germany that juts into the northern sea and has the longest beach in germany. Winds here are strong and houses nestle in the sand dunes. Sylt Island is the popular place for nudism in Germany. There is also a beach sauna where they pour plum whisky onto the hot rocks. Then get out of the sauna and jump into the cool ocean. Ah, nothing like a sauna followed by a dip into cold water.

In Lower Saxony you should visit the village of Langelon. If you are lucky you may see a parade of the shooting club. The people get together on Saturdays and wednesdays and shoot guns in the shooting gallery. The other purpose of the shooting club is social. People get together to drink beer and socialise. A hay hotel is a hotel in lower saxony where you stay in a room filled with hay. The hay is really comfortable to sleep on but the cows may have bad manners.
