Corsica Adventures

Corsica is a part of France and is three hours away from africa and one hour away from france. Corsica lies in the mediterranean sea and is the stepping stone to africa. Forget your south of france, corsica is where you come to get some serious water sports. The most popular beaches are in Calvi in Corsica and you will surely find a nice place to stay right by the beach. The rent for some beach side rooms can be as low as $25 per night.

The tourist office of calvi is located at the Port de Plaisance, Calvi and is open every day from nine a.m. to seven thirty p.m. The Local Tourist Office of Calvi will give you an hour and a half heritage tour of Calvi, so do not miss out on the service. You can fly to Corsica from Paris to Ajaccio or from Nice in France to Calvi. There is an airport in Calvi. For ferries to Corsica, you can catch a boat from Nice to Bastia or Calvi. Other ports where ferries arrive and depart are Ile Rousse, Bastia, Genes, Bonifacio, Ajaccio. From Calvi train station you can catch the small train of Corsica, U Tringhellu. Bus services connect towns such as Calvi , Ile Rousse, and Bastia. From Calvi there are buses to Calenzana, Galeria, Porto, and Saint-Florent.

The Citadel of Corte is a genovese castle that was retaken in the ninth century from the Moors by the local Corsican hero, Ugo Colonna. Places to see in Corte include the Gaffori Square, The Belvedere, the Corsican Museum, The Gorges of the Restonica, Melo Lake, Capitello Lake, the the Tivignano Gorge.

Go for a hike in the mountains around Corte and see the waterfalls. To see the higher peaks you will need a guide and be equipped for real climbing. YOu can only camp in authorised camp sites and you can stay at a hut but you must bring your own food. You can stop off at the goatherders hut to milk the goats and get some goats milk. The mountains rise to seven thousand feet and the lakes are frozen in winter so go there in the northern summer months. Even on a hot summer day, mists can come in at any time, so be careful. If you need to be evacuated the helicopter rescue will cost more than a couple of thousand dollars.

Music for Corsicans has been entertainment and political expression. Corsicans have suffered repeated invasions so they are wary of strangers. The people of Corsica have a strong independant spirit. Goats cheese is everywhere in Corsica. Corsicans have their own latin based language and in some places, this is all they speak, but French is the official language. The mountain range down to Ajaccio goes through some lovely country in which Napoleon was born. There is a memorial in the town of Ajaccio and you can go and visit the original house of Napoleon. From Bonifacio you can jump on a yacht and get a lift to Sardinia or you might have to work for your passage. The regular ferry to Sardinia goes four times a day and is very cheap.
