Kimberley Australian Vacations

The Kimberley region of Western Australia is a wild and beautiful place in the north of Australia. There are rugged cliffs, narrow gorges and flowing rivers. The King Leopold Ranges are the gateway to a wilderness. The fishing is fantastic in the waterholes and rivers. You can catch barramundi in droves, see the wild geese fly by, the egrets dancing their mating rituals. The main places to go in the Kimberley region of Western Australia are Kalumbaru, Mitchell Falls, Wyndham, Kununurra, Fitzroy Crossing, Halls Creek and Derby.

At Kalumbaru in the Kimberley region of Western Australia you can see old prehistoric rock art. The Wandjina figures are most prominent and they bring the monsoon rains and storms. The highly stylized wandjina paintings are very striking. The bradshaw paintings are even older. The caves where the paintings are found are sacred and nothing should be touched or disturbed. The paintings vary in significance and some sites are just secular paintings. For camping you need a nice flat area. Look for a tent that is easy to set up, have a sewn in floor and have lots of ventilation. You can sleep under the stars in a swag which is a mattress on top of a piece of canvas. Take care of your fire and make sure it is put out properly when you leave. Out in the bush you have to treat it the right way. Dont pollute the water with soap. For a toilet, dig a deep hole and bury it when you finish.

The Durack River Homestead along the Gibb River Road of the Kimberley area of Western Australia has camping sites or you can stay at the homestead. The river is cool and inviting at Jacks Waterhole. YOu can fish or paddle a canoe around Jack's hole. You can watch the wild life or take an early morning swim. For four wheel driving be careful when crossing rivers and creeks. Take it slow and steady and you will be right. The Mitchell Falls are along a rough track from the Durack River. It is a very unique area. There are palms in plenty and unique animals and birds. Around any water you will find brolgas and herons. There are deeply eroded gorges. This area deserves to be a National Park. Take a chopper ride to the falls and see the majestic beauty from the air. The Mitchell Falls are a magical place in rugged country carved out of the Mitchell River. In the wet it is a cascading waterfall and in the dry it is just a trickle. The Kimberley region of Western Australia is a pristine wilderness.

North of Kalumbaru you can go fishing in the ocean on the reefs for black kingfish, mulloway, or spanish mackerel. Pull in a trevally on your rod and have a nice feed of fish for dinner on the fire that night. Spanish Mackerel are one of the best fighting fish out and they taste delicious. Catch them on a simple lure behind the boat. From August to September you will be sure to catch a spanish mackerel. The best time for barramundi is December and January. Cut your spanish mackerel into one to two inch steaks and fry it in the pan or the barbeque plate. It is a meal fit for a king.
