One of the travellers ultimate destinations, India has 18 languages. Rajasthan in the West of India is one of the most colorful and exciting states of India and contains the annual fair held at Pushkar. Pushkar has camels and more camels and more camels - and even a ferris wheel. For Four days during the full moon the Pushkar fair is held. Everyone is dressed up. it is a religious festival and around the holy lake the pilgrims come to have their sins washed away and perform the hindu puja or offering at the holy lake. Travellers are encouraged to wash away all their bad karma.

You can buy anything you like in the crowded markets and can stay at one of the many inns. There are sadhus galore that wander around and bless people. At the temples the priests of the brahmin caste officiate at the offerings or puja. Pushkar has many pilgrims that crowd the sites. The common thing is to eat vegetarian food and only eat with your right hand not your left. The left hand is used to wipe your bottom so never eat or shake hands with your left hand.

A meal will cost twenty rupees - less than a dollar . The camel traders come from around the country to sell and buy camels. Up to 50,000 camels can be traded and can cost up to five hundred dollars. The Pushkar Fair in Rajasthan India is held every year in November. There is a riot of color and a manic burst of activity. The Pushkar Fair is an opportunity for the people of Rajasthan to socialise and have some break from the harsh life of the desert. And to have a little fun of course. The Hindu Pilgrims come to Pushkar to wash away their sins by having a dip in the sacred Pushkar lake. To get there you can fly into Jaipur which is about 130 kilometers from Pushkar. You can catch the train to Ajmer from Delhi, Agra, Ahmedabad, or Jodhpur. Of course you can catch a bus from most major cities or drive or ride your Enfield motor bike. Accommodation is very difficult to find during the Fair so make sure you book in advance or do what i did and go early.
