Lombok and Gili Air Indonesia

The island of Lombok in Indonesia is a peaceful place and there is a dive center designed to protect the turtles. Marine turtles are an endangered species and the locals are hoping to save the turtles and release the turtles in the fishing nets. The turtles eggs are bought from the local markets and when they hatch they are put into ponds and fed. The local fishermen bring turtles to the dive center so they are a hospital as well. Some sick turtles that are brought by local Lombok and Gili Air fishermen are given treatment and helped to get better.

Turtles are magnificent creatures in the wild ocean around Lombok and Gili Air. You can dive beside them and play gently with them. Gili Air coral was destroyed by fishermen using explosives. This was four or five years ago. The Indonesian Navy stopped the fishermen from using explosives and using poisons to get exotic tropical fish for sale. Illegal fishing has been mostly stopped in Gili Air and Lombok. These people are very poor and need to catch fish to eat. The fishermen are using nets to fish again to help protect the environment of the coral reefs. Giant clams are put back into the ocean to help revitalise the reefs. They use air breathing apparatus to go to the bottom of the sea and put back the giant clams.

The fishermen of LOmbok do not earn much and with hard work have to send their children to school. They grow seaweed on Lombok to supplement their income , harvesting it from lines of rope. The seaweed is used as a gelling agent for cosmetics and other things. Gili Air off Lombok in Indonesia is a magical jewel in the Indonesian Archipelago. The coral is slowly growing back off Gili Air and Lombok.
