kota baru kelantan malaysia

Well here I am in Kota Baru, and it is Thursday and I am sitting in the garden at the Guest House (Johntys Guest house) eating some weird asian fruit. It is nice, though. I do not know what it is called. Some German dude gave it to me. Kota Baru is the capital of the state of Kelantan in Malaysia. The Kota Baru Market is the main focus of the town center and is an exciting place to visit with its stalls run by women selling chillies, seafood, carrots and farm produce. The food stalls at Padang Bas in the town center are a delight if you want to try the local tucker. Another place to stay in Kota Baru is Menora Guest House and Mummys Hitec hostel in the alley off Pengkalan Chepa.

The Istana Batu contains the Royal Museum and the history of the Kelantan royal family and the former Sultans. They have pictures, silver, furniture and regalia from the old days of the sultanates.

Kota Bharu lies near the mouth of the Kelantan River and is near to the Thai Border. Don't forget to visit the McDonalds in the center of town as well. That is a lesson in expediential ideology.

Carrying on my diary entries, blah - Anyway to cut a long story short i got to kota baru, and who should turn up at the hostel but the Perfect Couples Club, who thankfully moved to another hostel. Today I trudged around town looking the cultural center. I finally found it but it was closed for the monsoon season. The museum was open so I went in and looked at the exhibits. They had some nice musical instruments - drums, and xylophone thingies and stringed violin-type instruments. I might go to the beach tomorrow - not sure which one, though. Maybe Kuala Besar. I will have to catch a bus. It is about fifteen kilometers to the north.

I had the best breakfast today - mee soup or noodle soup with tofu and fish crackers and chillies at the Chinese Restaurant. Then I caught the bus to Sabak Beach. It is a nice beach but the sand is taking over the town and had consumed whole houses. I walked to the breakwater along the beach. I came back to catch the bus but there was no bus for two hours because the driver had to go to pray. So I went to the local warung and had rice and fish and curry.
