You can catch a train to Yogyakarta and it will cost about a few dollars for second class. The Buddhist temples of Borubudur are an amazing place to visit. It is one of the most holiest spots in Buddhism. It is a three temple complex and built in the ninth century. Buddhist pilgrims ascending the different levels. The carvings will teach you lessons in life. There are 504 different statues of the buddha.

yogyakarta is a favourite city in Java. It is the guardian of Javanese tradition. The traffic is pretty horrendous so take a betchak or a trishaw on a bicycle. The bird market has a wide array of birds. There is a love of bird singing so birds are very popular in Java.

An hours bus ride from Jogya will get you to Kudus. It is very traditional. When the dutch came to Indonesia they wanted cloves to keep meat in good condition. Cloves are mixed with tobacco to make kretek cigarettes. There are many cigarette factories making kreteks by hand. Old ladies roll them for all their lives.
