Gili Air, off the island of Lombok in Indonesia lies just next to Bali and has some of the finest reefs for recreational purposes that are just being reinstated to their former glory. Go north to visit the halong bay area in northern vietnam where you can cruise amongst thousands of limestone islands that are honey-combed with caves full of bats, stalagmites, stalactites and tourists paddling kayaks. Head east along the islands of Nusa Tenggara to Lombok, Komodo, Flores, The Banda Islands (Spice Islands) and hence to Timor and the island of Roti, the most southern point of the Indonesian Archipelago.

Murphey does a very good job of focusing on themes and meaningful interpretation of historical trends but the author doesn't resort to distilling complicated histories into linear progressions or other simplistic constructions.
