Indonesia has over 13000 islands and hundreds of volcanos. Indonesian archipelago goes from Asia to Australia. Every year millions of tourists come to Bali. Kuta is the first stop in Bali it is a tourist hot spot. The exchange rate can vary on a daily basis and you can get a lot of rupiah for your dollar. There are loads of cheap hotels in the center of Kuta. The place is amazing and beautiful. You can get a lovely cool room with a firm bed. There are flowers and sunshine.

Over 90% of Balinese are HIndus. There are little parcels of flowers all over the place. They are religious offerings. There are lots of cheap motorbikes that you can rent but it can be dangerous. The atmosphere is great and so is the beach. There are massages, tattoos or you can go surfing. It is good to learn surfing at Kuta. It is a good atmosphere for meeting people. Get a board that is easy to learn on. But remember that learning to surf is not easy and takes lots of time and patience. High season for surfing is june and july when you get the biggest waves.

At the beach you will not be able to escape getting a massage. Head out of Kuta on a bemo and head north to Ubud , the artist village. When you ride in a bemo you get to meet all the people and they are very friendly. Make sure you ask around about prices and find the proper price before you jump in. Eat at the warungs for a genuine balinese meal. The rice paddies are grown on a terrace. Be careful where you walk because you might damage the terraces.

Prices for consumer objects in Indonesia are increasing and wages are not keeping pace. Some Balinese have been master craftsmen for generations. A mask can take fifteen days to make. Each mask represents a character from the ramayana legend. Once you don the mask, you have to be careful not to be taken over by the character. There are lots of temples in Bali and that is where the dances such as the Kechak dance are held. There are lots of different dances, each with their own symbolism.

Get up at 3 am to climb the volcano Gunung Batur which is a holy mountain and you have to make an offering before you climb up. It takes about two hours to climb and it is hard in the dark so take a torch and a guide. Up on the volcano there is hot steam and you can bake a banana in the steam.

Lovina is on the northern coast of Bali. There are lots of places to stay. Boys have cricket fights. Go out on an outrigger canoe and look for a dolphin. If you do not see a dolphin you can go and see the center where they rescue the turtles. They hatch the eggs and when they grow up they release them into the sea after tagging them.

The Balinese new year is held to scare away the bad spirits and welcome in the new year. They kill a buffalo and gamble on dice games. The ceremony has ladies in their best kabayahs and the gamelan orchestra plays music. The demons do not like the noise. The traditions need to be preserved and protected.
