Namibia Travel Adventures

Windhoek is the capital of Namibia. You can fly into Windhoek, Namibia and from there take a bus to Swakopmund which is on the Atlantic Coast. Namibia has a sparse population which is largely covered by desert. At Swakopmund the desert goes right up to the coast of Namibia. It was built by German colonialists in the nineteenth century. The tannery is a big industry for wild animals. You can get a lion or a zebra skin if you are into that sort of thing. A lot of German holiday tourists come here for the sun and the beaches. In the far north is a region called Ovamboland. The Ovahimba tribes people had never seen white people before a short time ago. Ovahimba tribes people wear red ochre to protect them from the sun and mosquitoes. They do not understand why the white people come but they know that it makes them some money. Some people such as anthropologists fear that the exposure to western culture is spoiling their life style.

Swakopmund on the Atlantic coast of Namibia has dune buggies that you can use to get around in. You can go for a drive in the dunes along the coast. The Namib desert is said to be the oldest in the world. You can head south to see the red sand dunes of sossussvlei. You can try sand surfing the dunes on a snow board. In the Namib Desert you will certainly see some strange flora and fauna in the desert. There are some of the highest sand dunes in the world. But always have plenty of water and wear a hat to protect you from the sun.

The Fish River Canyon is further south in Namibia and is a hundred miles long. Luderitz is a German settlement on the coast of Namibia and survives now on the nearby diamond mine. The nearby town of Kolmanskop is a ghost town with the sand now overtaking the buildings. Around Luderitz you can see seals frolicking in the sea. The port of Luderitz in Namibia grew around Robert Harbour and Shark Island. Luderitz started as a trading post for fishing and guano.
