Ngecha Kenya Painters

A group of artists from Ngecha, near to Nairobi in Kenya have started to make art to support their families and their villages. They sell their art works to overseas buyers and a genuine Kenyan art movement has emerged to help the economy of the Kenyan village. International art collectors are interested in the Kenyan art and this further fuels a boom in art production. A small group of farmer artists have caught the attention of art connoisseurs the world over. In Ngecha they produce milk, and they also have sheep. The artists are famous beyond the Kenyan borders. The artists have studios for producing their native art works.

The artists encourage each other. It all started ten years ago when a few brave men walked into a gallery in Nairobi with armfuls of paintings. The gallery took them on and encouraged them to paint more and keep on painting. The artists had to struggle to be accepted in their country of Kenya. Today Ngecha has other artists and there are up to fifty artists in this Kenyan village. In the studio, paintings are produced and then sold to galleries in New york or paris or anywhere all over the world.

The Ngecha artists gather together to share and pass on their art to the younger kenyan artists who are struggling and coming up. The whole village almost caught the painting bug and now whole families are painting. While the paintings are being made, the other artists come together and discuss the art work and they compare notes and give feedback on what they think about the painting. In this way, art is developed in the village. The art of this kenyan village is giving the community hope for the future. The Ngecha artists are untrained but that gives them a certain uniqueness. There is no art school in kenya but a genuine art movement has been born. Ngecha is 20 kilometres from Nairobi, Kenya.
