Botswana Adventures in Africa

For starters in your travels to Botswana go to Kasane just outside the Chobe National Park to save money. You can stay in a native hut outside the park or drive and camp inside the park. Get up at dawn to go visit the Chobe National Park in Botswana and you will see hundreds of different species of wild african animals. You will see lions or hippos. You do not run from a lion. They tend to be afraid of humans. A dead buffalo could have been killed by lions. The buzzards feed on the dead carcases that are left. The Chobe National Park is most famous for its elephant herds. Elephants bathe once a day and consume a ton of food a month. They are very caring parents.

The Hippos live in the Chobe River to stay cool and their skin can get sunburnt. They are very dangerous and more people get killed by hippos than anything else. The hippos feel safer in the water. You have to have a guide in the park and guides can be quite expensive. You can track a lion with the guide by following tracks left by the lions. It is like finding a needle in a haystack. If the impalas are a bit flighty you might get to see some lions. The lions will feed on the carcase but stay quite still when you are observing them. They do not like fast jerky movements. The males have a magnificent mane and look majestic.

The Okavango Delta can only be reached by plane. From the airport get on a dugout canoe made from a tree and go on a trip through the Okavango lagoons and islands. The Okavanga Delta in Botswana has a spectacular variety of bird life. The crocodiles can be dangerous so dont go sticking your hands in the water. At night you can see a traditional dance made by the fisherfolk. The dancers can go into a trance to contact the spirit world. The delta is dotted with camps and you can stay in a tree house for about twenty five dollars. Take a guide and go for a walk to see the wild life. Zebra and giraffe are very shy animals and it is best to approach them from the cover of the bush. You may need to bring some binoculars to see the shy animals. The cheapest way to stay is to stay in a tent in a camp site. But watch out for the snakes. Elephants can knock down a tree onto your tent and keep your camp clean so the baboons do not pester you.

Maun is the home of the Batawana tribe and the entrance to the Okavango Delta. The best time to go is during the winter months between May to October because there is not much rain and it is nice and warm. The women make dolls and dress in victorian clothes that the missionaries made them wear.
